Initially we use quantitative techniques to identify companies that meet our investment criteria and have a higher probability of outperforming. We then focus our research efforts on a narrower group of companies and subject them to rigorous fundamental analysis. Essentially we aim to reach a detailed understanding of a business by forecasting how it is likely to develop, identifying any potential growth catalysts, and assessing any related risks and sensitivities. By making clear and explicit judgements for each of these factors we can better assess potential investments and identify the best possible stocks for our portfolios.
The portfolio construction process has been streamlined to ensure that the portfolio continually represents our best ideas based on our fundamental research judgements. First State monitors its portfolios to check the consistent application of the portfolio construction parameters as part of its global risk management function.
