The key philosophy behind First State Investment’s membership of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) is that we believe Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues have the potential to impact investment returns; and for us as a global asset manager, the implementation of the framework provided by the PRI makes good investment sense. Also, by becoming a signatory to the PRI, First State Investments believes it will act in greater alignment with our clients’ long-term investment interests.

In addition to the rigorous research that has long been undertaken by our investment teams, we believe the PRI provide a formal framework for the consideration of ESG issues when making investment decisions. Ultimately, we think our investment managers will be better informed to make long-term investment decisions, leading to an enhanced risk/return outcome for our clients.

To demonstrate our commitment to being amongst the leading Responsible Investment global asset managers, our Responsible Investment team is driving what we are doing under each of the Principles and has developed a framework that helps our business provide a more transparent account of our implementation of the PRI. An annual responsible investment report is produced to provide a valuable insight to our clients, our consultants and our fellow asset managers.
